Eine Frau liegt wach. Pupillen wie Streichholzer, verschwitzte Haut, unregelmäßig zuckende Muskeln. Sie hat drei Monate lang nicht geschlafen. Sie weiß, was mit ihr geschehen wird. Und es gibt nichts, was sie tun konnte.
Francesca Trevisan wird in ihrem Auto in der Nordsee gefunden. Ihre Nachbarn sagen, sie habe sich in letzter Zeit seltsam verhalten. Ihre Tochter und ein Arzt, den sie nie getroffen hat, versuchen herauszufinden, was sie zu dieser Tat getrieben hat. Vor dem Hintergrund einer sich immer weiter verschärfenden BSE-Krise, gehen Cosima und Dr. Graham auf eine Reise durch die Geschichte. Es ist ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit, um die Ursachen und die Heilung dieser seltenen Krankheit herauszufinden, bevor das kommerzielle Interesse wieder erlischt.

Inspiriert von der wahren Geschichte einer Familie mit einer seltenen genetischen Krankheit, die die Mitglieder auf grausame Weise des Schlafes beraubt bis sie sterben, treffen im Stück Schlafforschung und Prionentheorie aufeinander. Und der Abend stellt die Frage: Wie entscheiden wir über den Wert eines menschlichen Lebens?

Nach einer Vorstellungsserie in London kehrt die Koproduktion mit der britischen Gruppe Analogue zurück nach Mainz. Analogue verbinden in ihren Arbeiten mitreißende Handlung und strenge wissenschaftliche Forschung.

Francesca Trevisan’s body is discovered in her car in the North Sea. Her neighbours say she had been acting strangely. Her daughter and a doctor she has never met are left to discover what drove her to commit such an act. Set against the backdrop of an unfolding mad cow crisis, Cosima and Dr Graham go on a journey through history and a race against time to find the cause and cure of a rare disease before its commercial interest wanes.

Inspired by the extraordinary true story of a family cursed with a rare genetic disease that cruelly deprives members of sleep until they die, Sleepless is a story that sits at the crossroads of two cutting edge areas of science: sleep research and prion theory, and begs the broader question: how do we decide the value of a human life?
Sleepless is a new show from Analogue, one of the UK’s most exciting young companies, who have developed a reputation for their visual performance style that combines powerful storytelling with rigorous scientific research.

The show is being co-produced with Staatstheater Mainz, and the majority of the show will be made in Mainz, Germany in 2016, ahead of a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a run at Shoreditch Town Hall and further performances in Mainz in Autumn 2016, with UK and international touring from 2017.
